NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of North Florida women's tennis team wrapped up its 2013 regular season with a 6-1 win at Lipscomb on Saturday afternoon, clinching the second seed in next week's Atlantic Sun Tournament with the victory.
The Ospreys started the day well, winning their fourth-straight doubles point with a pair of victories. Junior
Simona Weymar and sophomore
Rebeca Pereira opened the action with an 8-2 win at No. 2. The duo is now 9-0 on the year, including a 5-0 mark in A-Sun play. Sophomores
Marina Cunningham and
Taylor Hollander then sealed the doubles point with an 8-3 win at No. 3 to put UNF up 1-0.
UNF took home wins in five of the six singles matches to polish off the Bisons. Senior
Lorena Aviles earned a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 1 to move to 15-3 on the year, while Weymar grabbed her 10th win in 11 matches with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 2.
Cunningham rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3, while senior
Melanie Aguirre grabbed her fifth consecutive win with a 6-0, 7-5 triumph at No. 5. Freshman
Mariella Calderon got her team-best sixth-straight win at No. 6 with a 6-1, 6-2 to round out the action for UNF.
"I'm very happy with today's win," Head Coach Audra Cohen said. "We traveled a long way this weekend and we're glad to come home with two wins and start getting ready for the conference tournament."
As the second seed in the next week's six-team A-Sun tournament, the Ospreys will receive a bye into Saturday's semifinals, where they will face the winner of Friday's #3-#6 matchup. Last year, UNF entered the tournament as the top seed and emerged with its second Atlantic Sun Championship.
