JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida earned its third consecutive victory on Saturday afternoon, as it rolled to a 6-1 victory over Cleveland State at UNF Tennis Complex.
The Ospreys set the tone for the match early, as sophomore
Norbert Nemcsek and senior
Daniel Sotomarino blanked their opponents at No. 2 doubles, rolling to an 8-0 victory. Seniors
Pedro Davisson and
Leonardo Nahar then clinched the doubles point with an 8-4 win at No. 3.
Seniors
Moritz Buerchner and
Julien Belair found themselves in a marathon match at No. 1 doubles, but prevailed, 9-8 (12-10), to finish the doubles sweep for UNF. Their victory marked the fourth consecutive match that the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles pairs have prevailed for the Ospreys.
Buerchner carried the momentum from his doubles win into singles play, as he cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 1 to put the Ospreys up 2-0. Nemcsek also issued a shutout in a set, downing Nolan Marks at No. 4, 6-0, 6-4, to put UNF just one point away from clinching the match.
Belair provided that point just minutes later, as he won his third consecutive match in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, over Ali Shabib, to give the Ospreys a 4-0 lead and seal their third victory in as many dual matches. Davisson earned a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory at No. 5 and Sotomarino triumphed at No. 2, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, before the Vikings won at No. 6 to log the final 6-1 scoreline.
In their previous three matches, all wins, the Ospreys have won 15 of their 18 singles matches, and have not lost any of the eight doubles matches that have been played to completion. With the win, UNF moves to 5-6 on the season, including a 3-1 mark at UNF Tennis Complex. Cleveland State falls to 3-7 with the loss.
The Ospreys will next take the courts on Tuesday, March 12, when they host South Alabama for a 2 p.m. match. All home contests are free to the public.
