Men's Tennis Knocks Off No. 74 South Alabama, 5-2

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida men's tennis team stretched its winning streak to four games on Tuesday afternoon with a 5-2 victory over No. 74 South Alabama at UNF Tennis Complex.

The Ospreys began the day by winning the doubles point for the fifth consecutive match. Seniors Moritz Buerchner and Julien Belair opened the action by earning their fifth straight win at No. 1, downing Gerhar Gruindelingh and Juan Troglia, 8-4. Seniors Pedro Davisson and Leonardo Nahar then clinched the point with an 8-4 win at No. 3 over Alex Bernard and Shayann Vaezzadeh.

The match at No. 2 doubles was left unfinished, though senior Daniel Sotomarino and sophomore Norbert Nemcsek were leading 6-5 at the time.

UNF was able to jump out to an insurmountable lead quickly in the singles matches, winning the first three completed contests. Nemcsek struck first, cruising to a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 4, though he was quickly followed by Belair, who put the Ospreys up 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Gruindelingh at No. 3.

Davisson scored the decisive victory for the Ospreys at No. 5, as he won his second consecutive straight-set decision, 6-3, 6-3 over Blake Gregor. Sotomarino later tacked on a fifth point for the Ospreys, bouncing back from a 4-3 defecit in the second-set tiebreak to earn a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) win at No. 2 over Bernard. The victory is Sotomarino's third in a row.

Two other Ospreys added to their own winning streaks, as Belair's win at No. 3 and Nemcsek's win at No. 4 were both players' fourth victory in as many matches.

"This was a great team victory for us," Head Coach Adam Schaechterle said. "In every ranked win we've earned the past two seasons, we've gotten big singles wins from Moritz [Buerchner] and Leo [Nahar]. I think it was great for our team to show that it could get it done today at other positions. We competed very well as a unit."

With the victory, the Ospreys improve to 6-6 on the year, including a 4-1 mark in home matches. UNF has now beaten three nationally-ranked opponents this season. The loss drops the Jaguars, who entered the match ranked 74th in this week's ITA National Team Rankings, to 8-9 on the year.

UNF is next in action on Thursday afternoon, when it opens Atlantic Sun Conference play with a home match against Kennesaw State. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. and admission is free to the public.
