Baseball Travels to Orlando for Midweek Tilt with UCF

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team hits the road for a midweek game against in-state rival UCF on Tuesday night at Jay Bergman Field in Orlando, Fla. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

North Florida enters the week with a 9-3 overall record. For their efforts, the UNF baseball team has been named to the College Baseball Daily Top 25 Mid-Major Poll. North Florida entered the rankings at No. 24. The ranking marks the second time in program history that the Ospreys have been ranked in the CBD Mid-Major Poll. Last season, North Florida entered the rankings at No. 23 after starting the season 11-4.
The Ospreys lead the all-time series with the Knights, 7-6. North Florida is just 1-4 at Harmon Stadium, but boasts a 6-2 overall mark in Orlando.
The last time UNF and UCF met in Orlando, the Ospreys posted a 13-6 victory (Mar. 3, 2010). Current players Corey Bass – an Orlando native – and Tommy Organ both played in the game. Bass finished 1-for-1 with a double, a run scored, an RBI and a walk, while Organ tossed 3.0 scoreless innings of relief allowing a hit and striking out a pair. In addition, current volunteer assistant coach Andrew Hannon played in the game for the Ospreys. Hannon finished the game 4-for-5 with two doubles, three runs scored and one RBI as the leadoff batter.
The meeting between the two teams will be the first for the Ospreys under the direction of head coach Smoke Laval.
North Florida is 2-0 this season against teams from the Sunshine State. The Ospreys defeated Bethune-Cookman, 4-2 in 11 innings, in Daytona Beach, before taking down No. 29 Florida, 7-6 in 10 innings, in Gainesville.
The Ospreys are currently 2-0 on the road in 2013, winning in Daytona Beach and Gainesville.
Scouting the Opposition
UCF enters the week with a 7-4 overall record, including a 7-3 mark at home. The Knights are 0-3 against teams from the Sunshine State this season, dropping games to Florida, USF and Bethune-Cookman.
UCF will be starting left-handed pitcher Eric Skoglund, while North Florida will counter with southpaw Michael Renner.
