NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Senior Jadhken Kerr scored her 1,000th career point and a trio of Ospreys tallied double-digit points as the University of North Florida women's basketball team finished the regular season with a 61-49 win over Lipscomb on Saturday night. The win allowed the Ospreys to clinch the No.5 seed for next week's 2013 General Shale Atlantic Sun Tournament.
The seventh player in program history to reach that benchmark, Kerr's 1000th point came on a three-pointer at 15:25 that pulled the Ospreys to within two as Lipscomb held a 34-32 lead. It would seem fitting for Kerr to reach the benchmark with a three – she is UNF's all-time leader in career three-point field goals made (260) and three-point field goals attempted (789) and ranks third all-time in the Atlantic Sun in each of those categories.
Kerr entered the game needing only five points to reach the 1000-point milestone. She finished with nine in the game and now has 1,004 career points.
Ki Conner led UNF with 18 points, while Raneisha Lamar and Destinee Smith added 16 and 11, respectively. Lamar and Kerr each grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Hannah Phillips led Lipscomb with 21 points and Kelli Smith chipped in with 14. Sasha Robinson grabbed a team-high eight boards.
UNF out-shot Lipscomb, but the Lady Bisons won the battle on the boards. UNF was 45.8 percent (22-for-48) from the floor, while Lipscomb shot 30.2 percent (16-for-53). Lipscomb out-rebounded the Ospreys 36-31.
UNF led by as much as four in the first half when Lamar sank a pair of foul shots at 10:07 to make it 15-11. However, Lipscomb came on strong to end the opening 20 minutes and went up by 10 at 1:09 on a Phillips three in order to take a 31-21 lead into halftime.
UNF got hot in the second half as Lipscomb's shooting turned to cold. The Ospreys made 13 of their 23 shots en route to shooting 56.5 percent for the half. Meanwhile, Lipscomb, who was 40.7 percent from the field in the first half, shot only 19.2 percent (5-for-26) in the second half.
The Ospreys used a 12-0 run to erase the Lady Bisons' lead and go up 37-34 at 12:28 on a Lamar layup. Although Phillips and Kelli Smith had four-straight points to return the lead to Lipscomb, another timely UNF run helped the Ospreys to a six-point lead. Conner drilled back-to-back threes and Kerr hit a free throw to give UNF the 44-38 lead with 8:08 to go.
Lipscomb eventually came to within three at 6:18, but UNF kept pulling away. The Ospreys went on to score the game's last eight points in the final 2:10 in order to take the win.
UNF now faces fourth-seeded USC Upstate in the 2013 General Shale Atlantic Sun Tournament. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
