JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida men's tennis team took home victories in five singles matches on its way to a 6-1 trouncing of UCF on Friday afternoon at UNF Tennis Complex.
"This was a good win for us," Head Coach Adam Schaechterle said. "We had some tough matchups in terms of style of play, but we competed very well in the big moments."
The Ospreys started the day in fine form, as seniors
Moritz Buerchner and
Julien Belair rolled to an 8-2 victory over Matthew Gladstone and Juan Bolona at No. 1 doubles. The remaining two doubles matches were more tightly-contested, though UNF triumphed in both. Senior
Daniel Sotomarino and sophomore
Norbert Nemcsek earned an 8-6 win at No. 2, while seniors
Leonardo Nahar and
Pedro Davisson won, 8-6, at No. 3 to complete the doubles sweep.
UNF has not lost a match at No. 1 or No. 2 doubles in any of the last three matches.
The singles matches brought more of the same, as Sotomarino earned a three-set win at No. 2, 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 over Amar Hromic, while Belair won in straight sets at No. 4, 7-5, 6-3 over Gladstone to make the score 3-0 in favor of the Ospreys.
After the Knights earned a win at No. 1 to cut the defecit to 3-1, Nahar sealed the match with a hard-fought 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win over Francesc Aulina at No. 5.
Shortly after the match was decided, Nemcsek earned a win of his own at No. 3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, before freshman
Bernardo Craveiro staged a fierce rally in his first collegiate dual match to win at No. 6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).
"I was especially proud of Bernardo for gutting out a win at No. 6," Schaechterle said. "In his first-ever college dual match, he competed like a veteran and earned a tough victory."
With the win, the Ospreys improve to 4-6 on the season, including a 2-1 mark on their home courts. The Knights' loss, just their second in seven matches, drops them to 6-5 on the year.
The Ospreys will have seven days off until their next match, their longest break since the 2013 season began. UNF will next be in action when it hosts Cleveland State on March 9 for a 2 p.m. bout.
