CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- The University of North Florida men's tennis team earned their biggest win of the season on Sunday afternoon, downing No. 54 Miami for the first time in program history, 5-2.
"The guys were relentless today," Head Coach Adam Schaechterle said. "We built an early lead with doubles, but we never showed signs of being satisfied. We had an edge in singles that I loved to see"
Seniors
Moritz Buerchner and
Julien Belair notched their second doubles win in as many matches to start the day, downing Wilfredo Gonzalez and Marco Stancati, 8-3, at No. 1. Senior
Daniel Sotomarino and sophomore
Norbert Nemcsek then broke serve at a crucial juncture to earn a 9-7 win over Omar Aly and Gabriel Flores at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point for the Ospreys.
Seniors
Leonardo Nahar and
Pedro Davisson were tied 7-7 in the No. 3 doubles match when it was abandoned.
Belair quickly put the Ospreys up 2-0 with a straight-set victory at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-1, over Victor Mauz. After the Hurricanes got a victory at No. 5 to make the score 2-1, UNF put the match out of reach with a pair of quick wins.
Buerchner, who entered the weekend as the only nationally-ranked singles player competing (No. 96), took down Diego Soto at No. 1, 6-3, 6-3, before Nahar sealed the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Henrique Tsukamoto at No. 6 to give the Ospreys an insurmountable 4-1 lead.
Nemcsek later added a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4) win over Aly at No. 3 to achieve the final 5-2 margin. Complete results can be found below.
"Our tough non-conference schedule is really starting to pay off," Schaechterle said. "We look like a much hungrier, tougher, more competitive squad"
The victory improves UNF's record to 3-6 this season, while the Hurricanes fall to 6-3. The Ospreys' victory also snaps Miami's four-match winning streak and handed the Hurricanes their first home loss of the year. UNF had never beaten Miami in men's tennis prior to Sunday's win.
The Ospreys will return home for their next five matches, beginning with a match against UCF on March 1 at 2 p.m. The Knights will represent just the second unranked team UNF has faced this season. Admission to all home matches is free.
