JACKSONVILLE – The North Florida basketball team closes out its home schedule Saturday at 4:30 p.m. against USC Upstate in UNF Arena. The game, sponsored by Pepsi, also marks the final home appearance for a quartet of Osprey seniors.
The Ospreys (11-17, 6-9 ASun) look to continue their winning ways at home having won two straight, including a 77-64 victory over ETSU on Thursday night. Meanwhile, USC Upstate (14-15, 8-8) is trying to rebound from a tough 68-64 loss at Jacksonville on Thursday.
Prior to tipoff of the game, the UNF senior class of Andy Diaz, David Jeune, Parker Smith and Will Wilson will be honored during a ceremony. The group has been a part of a program record 55 victories during their four seasons at UNF and helped lead the program to three regular season tournament titles and a program first appearance in the Atlantic Sun tournament championship game. All four leave with their names littered among the single game, single season and career record lists.
Saturday's contest marks the 19th meeting between the Ospreys and Spartans on the hardwood with the Upstate holding an 11-7 lead in the all-time series. The Spartans have claimed the last three meetings including a 63-57 decision earlier this season in Spartanburg, S.C.
In the pair's first game, the two squads battled back and forth through the opening 20 minutes highlighted by nine lead changes and five ties. The Spartans opened up a double-digit lead in the second half as the Ospreys struggled shooting going 1-18 from beyond the three-point line. UNF made a late charge but USC Upstate was able to convert free throws in the closing minutes to secure the win.
The game features two of the league's top scorers in UNF's Parker Smith (16.5 ppg) and Upstate's Torrey Craig (17.0). In addition, Smith pairs with freshman Beau Beech to form the ASun's most potent three-point tandem combining for 145 this season followed by the Spartan pair of Craig and Ty Greene with 128.
