JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida men's tennis team captured the doubles point, but fell 6-1 to No. 20 Baylor on Thursday afternoon at the UNF Tennis Complex.
"Baylor is one of the most well-coached squads in the country and they showed that they were talented at every position," Head Coach Adam Schaechterle said. "It was a privilage to host them at UNF and I was very proud of how our guys competed today."
Seniors
Moritz Buerchner and
Julien Belair, playing together for the first time in the 2013 season, started the day right, as they cruised to a strong 8-2 victory over Roberto Maytin and Marko Krickovic at No. 1 doubles. After Baylor grabbed a victory at No. 3, the doubles point hinged on the match at No. 2.
Senior
Daniel Sotomarino and sophomore
Norbert Nemcsek, also a first-time pairing this season, found themselves down 6-4 to Mate Zsiga and Tony Lupieri before winning four consecutive games to earn the 8-6 win and grab the doubles point for the Ospreys.
Unfortunately, the Bears stormed back dominating fashion to win all six singles matches and take home a 6-1 victory. Complete results can be found below.
"The home crowd in doubles was amazing and helped us pull off the upset there," Schaechterle said. "In singles, we had chances in some close first sets, but just couldn't break through. We're improving as a team and I'm looking forward to a great effort at Miami on Sunday."
The loss drops UNF to 2-6 on the season, while Baylor improves to 6-1.
The Ospreys will face the No. 54 Miami Hurricanes for their next match, scheduled for 11 a.m. on Sunday morning in Coral Gables.
