JACKSONVILLE – The North Florida basketball team opens its final home stand of the season Thursday as the Ospreys host Atlantic Sun Conference foe East Tennessee State in UNF Arena at 7 p.m. The game is sponsored by VyStar Credit Union.
The Ospreys (10-17, 5-9 ASun) hope to return to the winning track after dropping back-to-back game including a 70-68 loss at rival Jacksonville last Friday. ETSU (9-19, 7-8) has won three of their last five games but dropped a 71-54 decision to Mercer in their last outing.
Thursday's tilt marks the 17th meeting between the Ospreys and Bucs in hoops action with the ETSU holding a 15-1 lead in the all-time series. UNF is searching for its first win over the Bucs in Jacksonville with the squad's lone win in the series coming in the 2011 Atlantic Sun Tournament. The last two games of the series played in UNF Arena have both been decided by five points or less.
In the season's first game between the pair, UNF raced out to a 45-33 halftime lead behind a blistering 68 percent shooting in the first half in Johnson City, Tenn. ETSU battled back outscoring the Ospreys, 56-30, in the second half to earn the 89-75 victory.
The game features two of the league's top scorers in UNF's Parker Smith and ETSU's Jarvis Jones, who are both averaging 16.7 points per game this season. Smith, who recorded six three-pointers against the Bucs in the first meeting, enters the tilt just six treys shy of setting an ASun single season record for three-pointers made.
