ATLANTA, Ga. -- The University of North Florida men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 65 Georgia Tech on Saturday afternoon as it faced its sixth nationally ranked team in seven matches.
"This loss was frustrating because we are struggling with the same issues as we have in the past," Head Coach Adam Schaechterle said. "Once again, we just weren't tough enough deep in sets."
The day started very well for UNF, as senior
Moritz Buerchner and sophomore
Norbert Nemcsek knocked off Juan Spir and Vikram Hundal in a tiebreak at No. 1 doubles, 8-7 (9-7). The duo from Georgia Tech was ranked third nationally in this week's ITA National Doubles Rankings, while Buerchner and Nemcsek were ranked 12th.
Despite the UNF victory at No. 1, the Yellow Jackets claimed the other doubles matches and, with them, the doubles point, en route to the 6-1 victory.
Senior
Julien Belair was the only Osprey to notch a win in singles play on Saturday, downing Nathan Rakitt in a three-set marathon at No. 4 singles, 7-6, 2-6, 6-4.
Sophomore
Timo Kranz, playing at No. 6, and Nemcsek, playing at No. 3, were also able to take their opponent into the third set before falling. Complete results can be seen below.
"We're going to learn from this and get back to work tomorrow," Schaechterle said. "We're going to look to improve before a couple of tough matches next weekend in Baylor and Miami.
With the loss, UNF falls to 2-5 on the season. The Ospreys will next be in action on Thursday, February 21, when they return to Jacksonville for their second home match of the 2013 season. UNF will face Baylor, who is currently ranked No. 18 in the country, in a 2 p.m. match.
