JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- With just over three minutes left in the first overtime period, Jon-Michael Vieira pushed a shot save rebound into the back of the net securing a 1-0 victory for North Florida over Stetson at Hodges Stadium.
Drew Spragg created the clinching goal after carrying the ball into the box from the left wing and blasting a shot that bounced off the Stetson keeper's hands and settled at Vieira's feet just five yards out in front of the net. The junior midfielder easily finished the game winner.
The win marks the second straight for the Ospreys, who improve to 6-5-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the Atlantic Sun. Stetson slips to 3-9-3 and 2-4-1.
UNF was the agressor for much of the game using a solid possession style to create several quality scoring chances. The Ospreys outshot the Hatters, 14-5, for the game including getting seven shots on frame.
"It was a great game tonight," said UNF head coach Derek Marinatos. "Stetson is a quality team that made it difficult to break them down. I thought we created some good chances. I was proud of our team in the fact that every guy that got on the field gave us a lift. I felt like in the second half and overtime that we had fresher legs and that proved to be the difference. We needed somebody to step up and get us a goal and I'm excited that Jon-Michael was in the right spot to convert. We are starting to play well at the right time of the season."
Spragg led all players finishing with four shots including two on goal. Pedro Carneiro added three shots with Jake Frahm, Jean Rivaroli and Sean Young each tallying a pair. Chase Rodgers and Sebastian Contreras both recorded two shots for the Hatters.
Brad Sienkiewicz posted two saves en route to his sixth win of the year and fourth shutout. Hatter goalkeeper Andreas Schnabl finished with six saves on the night.
North Florida will visit crosstown rival Jacksonville on Wednesday before closing the regular season next Saturday against Florida Gulf Coast at Hodges Stadium.
