FORT MYERS, Fla. - Fifth-seeded North Florida upset top-seeded FGCU 2-1 in the Atlantic Sun Men's Soccer Championship Semifinal on Friday night to clinch a spot in championship final.
"It was a great game for us," said head coach Derek Marinatos. "Florida Gulf Coast is a really good team, but we believed coming into the match that we could beat them."Â
The match was a defensive battle for both teams from the beginning. The first shot of the match came from FGCU in the 19th minute when Felipe DeSousa sent his shot high over the goal. The Ospreys would respond with a counter shot less than a minute later when freshman Sean Young sent his shot high as well.
The first half would remain scoreless with FGCU holding a 4-1 advantage on shots and a 2-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Coach Marinatos would make some lineup changes at halftime, starting the second half with five fresh new legs for the Ospreys.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half, the substitutions proved to be a success as Alex Morrell made a pass to Luis Daniel Camejo who finished the play to the back of the net to give the Ospreys a 1-0 lead.
In the 80th minute, Pedro Carneiro blasted a shot from 18 yards out to extend the Ospreys lead 2-0.Â
FGCU responded with a goal in the 83rd minute when Henry Penagos sent a chip shot over the goalkeeper, but the goal would not be enough to mount a comeback for the Eagles.
The Ospreys remained diciplined in the physical battle which had 36 fouls, including nine cards.
"The match started off slow, but we made some adjustments and we were able to come out on top," said Marinatos. "I'm really proud of our guys."
The Ospreys advance to face ETSU in the Championship Final on Sunday, November 17th at 1 p.m. EST on ESPN3.
This marks the first time in North Florida's program history that it made an A-Sun Championship Final.
