DAYOTNA BEACH, Fla. – Senior
Paige Pridgeon joined the elite 1,000 kill-1,000 dig club on Tuesday night as University of North Florida volleyball powered its way for a 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-18) win at Bethune-Cookman at Moore Gymnasium.
“As a whole, I thought we did a nice job taking care of the ball,” said head coach Steve Loeswick. “I was really happy with the fact that we were able to play a lot of people and not have our level of execution drop. It's not very easy to win on the road, but we are excited to come home with another win.
“I feel very fortunate for Paige to be part of program,” continued Loeswick. “She is a very special player, who with great work ethic, continues to improve. I look forward to her becoming even better as the season continues.”
Pridgeon entered the night with 996 digs. Her 1000th dig cameduring the second set and she ultimately total seven digs on the evening. The Tallahassee, Fla.-native reached 1,000 kills last season against ETSU on Oct. 8, 2012 and entered tonight's match with 1,246 kills. Pridgeon, who joins Becky DeJong and Maegan Weisert as the only players in UNF history to reach both of those milestones, is the only active Atlantic Sun player with 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs to her career.
Pridgeon also led the UNF offense on the night, collecting 10 kills.
Casey Giovanazzi put up 24 assists, while
Nicole Baran had 12 digs.
“We did a really good job at staying focused and executing our game plan throughout the whole match,” said Pridgeon. “The environment was loud. It was a small gym and they had a lot of fans there.”
Krysta Gardner led Bethune-Cookman with eight kills and nine digs.
UNF had its best hitting match of the season. The Ospreys were .337 for the night, making 45 kills off 95 attempts and only committing 13 errors.
UNF started the match hitting an impressive .417 and strung together multiple runs in the first set. As a result of the runs, the closest Bethune-Cookman got to the Ospreys was four late into the set. UNF capitalized on several Lady Wildcat errors and made two aces and two kills in order to close out the set and go up 1-0 in the match.
In the second set, the Ospreys led from start to finish.
Dagnija Medina's second ace of the match gave UNF a 13-point, 21-8 advantage – its largest lead of the set. Bethune-Cookman eventually trimmed UNF's lead down to seven before the Ospreys captured the set's final three points.
Cameron McGuire clinched the set win with a kill that put UNF up 2-0 in the match.
With the Lady Wildcats up by one, a six-point UNF run allowed the Ospreys to distance themselves from Bethune-Cookman. UNF continued to pull away throughout the set and used a Lady Wildcat error to win the set and the match.
UNF returns to action this weekend at the Winthrop Invitational. It will be the Ospreys' final regular season tournament. Play begins for UNF on Friday at 5 p.m., against Western Carolina.
