CHARLESTON, S.C. – The University of North Florida baseball team fell 5-1 to The Citadel in nonconference action on the road on Wednesday afternoon at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park. The Ospreys surrendered three runs early and were unable to rally for the win.
Offensively, North Florida collected six hits, led by
Ryan Roberson who collected a pair of base knocks.
Tyler Marincov and
Spencer Herrmann each added doubles in the game.
Joe Wielbruda singled and scored the Ospreys' only run of the game.
Drew Weeks also garnered a hit for UNF.
On the mound,
Spencer Herrmann earned the start. The lefty worked 2.2 innings, surrendering four hits and being charged with three runs. The freshman walked two while striking out one. Herrmann was relieved by
Ryan McMahon. McMahon surrendered a pair of base hits before allowing
Evan Stermer to enter the game. Stermer tossed 1.2 innings allowing one run on two hits with a strikeout to his credit.
Evan Incinelli came in to pitch in relief. Incinelli worked the next 2.1 innings, scattering three hits. He allowed one run with a strikeout and no walks.
Jamie Cardwell worked the final 1.1 innings allowing no runs on one hit with a strikeout to his credit.
The Citadel was the first team to score, plating three runs in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, the Bulldogs recorded back-to-back singles for a pair of base runners. The Citadel tried the double steal, but
Corey Bass was able to throw out the trail runner, leaving the Bulldogs with a runner on third and one out. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases for the Bulldogs. Following a pitching change, the Ospreys surrendered consecutive singles to score three runs and take an early 3-0 advantage.
The Bulldogs added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The leadoff batter singled up the middle and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. The runner stole second and came around to score on a RBI single up the middle. A single gave The Citadel runners on the corners. After a strikeout, the Bulldogs scored the second run of the inning on a RBI single up the middle and take a 5-0 lead.
North Florida scratched the scoreboard with a run in the top of the sixth inning.
Joe Wielbruda was hit by a pitch to start the inning.
Ryan Roberson followed with a single to shallow right field.
Tyler Marincov walked to load the bases. Wielbruda came around to score on a double play to cut into the Bulldogs lead.
Neither team was able to score a run in the final three innings of the game, as pitching and defense flourished in the late innings.
