Tommy Organ worked 5.2 innings, striking out a career-high nine batters as the University of North Florida baseball team earned a 6-3 victory over The Citadel on Tuesday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park
On the mound, the North Florida pitching staff scattered six hits and allowed just three runs with only two earned runs. The pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts, paced by Organ's career-high nine. Organ surrendered four hits in 5.2 innings of work with no walks.
Trey Ferrano and
Nick Allbritton combined to work the next 2.1 innings, allowing two runs – one earned run – on a pair of hits. The duo each recorded a strikeout while allowing a walk.
Chandler Jagodzinski picked up his third save of the season, tossing the final inning. He faced the minimum, striking out one.
Offensively, the Ospreys scored six runs on seven hits. Six different UNF batters recorded hits on the night with
Joe Wielbruda notching a pair of base knocks.
Andrew Karmeris made his one hit count with a three-run home run that proved to be the game-winning hit.
Tyler Marincov and
Ryan Roberson each added doubles in the game. A. Karmeris was hit by a pitch and also drew a pair of walks, including an intentional walk to reach base four times in the game. He led all UNF batters with two runs scored and three RBI.
North Florida was the first team to score, plating three runs in the top of the second inning. Marincov led off the inning with a double to left field. A. Karmeris was hit by a pitch to give UNF a pair of base runners.
Alex Bacon laid down a bunt that was fielded and thrown to third to try to erase the lead runner, but Marincov beat out the throw to load the bases.
Spencer Herrmann put North Florida on the scoreboard with a sacrifice fly to center field. The two runners on base advanced on a ground out. A. Karmeris came home to score on a wild pitch.
Paul Karmeris followed with an RBI single down the left field line to give the Ospreys a 3-0 lead.
The Ospreys increased their lead in the top of the fifth inning.
T.J. Gavlik led off the inning with a single to left field. Wielbruda followed with a single through the left side of the infield. Roberson moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, A. Karmeris doubled the UNF lead with one swing, belting a three-run home run over the left field fence.
The home run was A. Karmeris' fifth of the season and his 28th homer of his career. Twenty-eight home runs ties A. Karmeris with Preston Hale (2007-10) and Eddie Bloom (1988-89) for eighth most is school history and places the senior in a tie for first in UNF's Division I history.
The Citadel chipped into North Florida's lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, the Bulldogs used a triple into the left field corner to place a runner 90 feet from home. The Ospreys conceded a run to get a force out at first base. UNF ended the inning with a fly ball, leading 6-1 after five complete innings of play.
The Bulldogs added a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. The leadoff batter walked, but the Ospreys caught the next batter looking at strike three for the first out of the inning. A double gave the home team runners on second and third with one out. North Florida struck out the following batter, but a passed ball allowed the lead runner to score, cutting the lead to 6-2.
The Citadel used a triple and a sacrifice fly to score a run in the eighth inning, but Jagodzinski closed the door on any potential comeback with a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his third save of the season.
North Florida and The Citadel conclude the two-game series with a single game on Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
