Baseball Drops Opening Game with ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The University of North Florida baseball team battled the elements in addition to East Tennessee State on Thursday night before dropping a 6-1 decision on Friday afternoon. The game was halted in the bottom of the seventh inning due to lightning in the area and resumed on Friday afternoon at Thomas Stadium in Johnson City, Tenn.
 
On the mound, Tommy Organ took the loss. The junior tossed 4.2 innings, surrendering four runs – three earned runs – on five hits. Organ fanned five batters, but allowed three walks and hit a pair in the losing effort. Organ gave way in the fifth inning to Nick Allbritton. The junior college transfer worked the next 2.0 innings allowing a pair of runs on four hits. Trey Ferrano pitched the last 1.1 innings, notching a 1-2-3 inning.
 
Offensively, the Ospreys collected five hits on the day, led by T.J. Gavlik who finished the day with a pair of hits. Chris Carter, Andrew Karmeris and Ryan Roberson each had hits in the game with A. Karmeris finishing the game with a double. Gavlik scored the only run of the game for the Ospreys on a RBI ground out by Corey Bass.
 
ETSU was the first team to plate a runner, scoring in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, the Buccaneers' Clinton Freeman hit a solo home run to right field to take an early 1-0 lead.
 
The Bucs increased their lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning. The leadoff batter walked and advanced to third on a double to left field, leaving the hosts with a pair of runners in scoring position. A single up the middle of the infield allowed both runs to score and give ETSU a 3-0 advantage.
 
The Buccaneers added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. The first two batters of the inning walked, but the Ospreys turned a double play to retire a pair, but leaving a runner on third. The lead runner advanced home on a passed ball for ETSU to take a 4-0 lead.
 
ETSU added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh. The first batter singled and moved to third on a double. A single scored the lead runner and left the hosts with runners on the corners. The Ospreys were able to pick off the runner on first base for the first out of the inning. A walk continued the inning and North Florida used a fielder's choice to retire the lead batter for the second out of the inning with lightning was spotted in the area, prompting a weather delay that lasted over 24 hours. The Bucs added an additional run in the inning as the runner on first got caught in a rundown allowing the runner on third enough time to cross the plate.
 
The Ospreys avoided the shutout with a run in the top of the ninth inning. Gavlik led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a double to left center by A. Karmeris. Bass plated Gavlik with a RBI groundout, but UNF was unable to complete the comeback.
