Baseball Salvages Final Game of Series with 10-4 Victory

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team used solid pitching and timely hits to record a 10-4 victory in the series finale with Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday afternoon at Swanson Stadium for the Ospreys' first Atlantic Sun Conference victory of the season.
 
The duo of Tommy Organ and Tyler Moore surrendered just four runs – two earned runs – on five hits in a combined nine innings.
 
Organ earned the start for the Ospreys. The junior tossed 4.2 innings, scattering three hits. Organ allowed three runs, but just two earned runs on the day. The southpaw walked two and struck out one. Organ retired seven consecutive batters at one stretch.
 
Moore entered the game with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The sophomore worked the final 4.1 innings, allowing just one unearned run on a pair of hits en route to his second victory of the season.
 
After falling behind 3-0 early, the North Florida offense used three combined runs in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game before taking the lead with four runs in the seventh. The Ospreys' pitching would not relinquish the lead, but UNF still added three insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning.
 
Paul Karmeris and Drew Weeks led all North Florida hitters with a pair of base hits in the game. The duo, combined with Michael Wesner, each recorded doubles in the game. Tyler Marincov led the Ospreys with three runs scored, while Andrew Karmeris, P. Karmeris and Wesner all had two runs apiece. Weeks led all UNF players with four RBI, followed by P. Karmeris who had two.
 
In the bottom of the second inning, North Florida worked out of a jam. Florida Gulf Coast broke up the no hitter with a double to right center field – the first hit for either team – to place a runner in scoring position. The base runner advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. A groundout to first base left the Eagles with a runner on third and two outs. Organ walked the next batter and he stole second base to give FGCU a pair of base runners in scoring position. Organ ended the inning with a fly ball out to shallow left field to keep the game tied at 0-0.
 
The Eagles claimed the lead in the bottom of the third inning. The inning started with a two-base error by the Ospreys. FGCU moved the runner to third base with a sacrifice bunt and a walk gave the home team runners on the corners. The Eagles' Andrew Valencia broke the scoreless tie with a three-run home run to left field to put FGCU in front 3-0.
 
The Ospreys cut into the deficit in the top of the fifth inning. P. Karmeris led off the inning with a double to left field – the first hit of the day for the Ospreys. A deep fly ball to center field advanced P. Karmeris to third base. With two outs, Corey Bass and T.J. Gavlik each drew walks to load the bases. Joe Wielbruda followed with an infield single to short to score P. Karmeris and put north Florida on the scoreboard.
 
In the top of the sixth inning, UNF knotted the score at 3-3 with a pair of runs. Marincov led off the inning with a walk. He advanced to third on a Wesner double to right center field. P. Karmeris drove home Marincov with a sacrifice fly to center field. On the play, Wesner was able to advance to third base. Wesner came home to score on a RBI ground out by Weeks, tying the score at 3-3.
 
North Florida took the lead in the top of the seventh inning. Bass started off the inning by reaching base courtesy of a Florida Gulf Coast throwing error. Gavlik followed with a single to left center field, giving the Ospreys a pair of base runners. The two runners advanced one base on a ground out.  A. Karmeris loaded the bases with a walk. The Eagles used a fielder's choice to eliminate the lead runner, but leave the bases loaded. FGCU's catcher fielded a ball hit by Wesner, but proceeded to throw the ball into the right field corner, clearing the bases and leaving Wesner on third base. Leading 6-3, P. Karmeris extended the UNF lead with an RBI single through the left side of the infield.
 
The Ospreys added some insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning. With one out, A. Karmeris walked and advanced to second base on a single by Marincov. P. Karmeris drew a two-out four-pitch walk to load the bases. Weeks delivered a base clearing double to push the UNF advantage to 10-3.
 
In the ninth inning, Moore led off the inning with back-to-back strikeouts. The Eagles benefited from a throwing error by the Ospreys for the first base runner of the inning. Back-to-back singles scored the lead runner, but a fly ball to right field ended the game with UNF in front 10-4.
 
North Florida returns to Jacksonville for six consecutive home games at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium. The Ospreys open up the home stand with a game on Tuesday, March 20 against Savannah State at 6:00 p.m. The game will mark the first “Toss It Back Tuesday” of the season – $1 draft beer while supplies last.
