JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida men's tennis opened 2012 Atlantic Sun Conference play with a 6-1 victory over USC Upstate on Friday at the UNF Tennis Complex.
The Ospreys got out to a 1-0 lead after taking the doubles point. Mortiz Buerchner and
Beauregard Treyz cruised to an 8-1 No. 2 doubles victory over Yvon Haessig and Pierre Vernin.
Leonardo Nahar and
Pedro Davisson took an 8-3 win against Gonzalo Blanco and Jacob Darling at No. 3 doubles. However, USC Upstate prevented a doubles sweep when Ramiro Blanco and Matthias Kidler defeated
Daniel Sotomarino and
Norbert Nemcsek 9-8 (6) at No. 1
In singles, the Ospreys claimed five of the six spots, including three three-set matches. Buerchner handed Ramiro Blanco his first singles loss of the spring season by claiming a 4-6, 7-6 (4), 10-5 No. 1 singles win. Sotomarino also pulled out a win in three-sets, defeating Kidler 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 at the No. 2 position. Davisson added a 6-3, 7-6 (3) win over Haessig at No. 4 singles, while Nahar cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 No. 5 singles victory against Tyler Grove. Treyz rallied at No. 6 singles after dropping the first set to down Vernin 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.
The Spartans' lone point came at No. 3 singles with Gonzalo Blanco defeating Nemcsek 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4).
UNF returns to the courts on Saturday morning when the Ospreys face ETSU at the UNF Tennis Complex at 10 a.m.
