JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Senior
Nicole Baran became UNF's all-time career leader in digs and University of North Florida volleyball swept Stetson 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-14) on Tuesday night at UNF Arena.
“It is a well-deserved accomplishment for Nicole,” said head coach Steve Loeswick. “I'm happy to see her set the digging standard here at UNF and hope she has a lot more digs before the end of the season.
Baran entered the match needing just five digs to break Tara Taylor's mark of 1,616 that was set in 2006. Baran broke Taylor's record in the second set and ultimately tallied 11 digs on the night to push her career total to 1,623.
Paige Pridgeon led the Ospreys with 12 kills, while
Britt Claessens put up 29 assists. Claessens,
Carolyn Jenkins and
Dagnija Medina each had four blocks on the night.
Kaley Melville led Stetson with seven kills. Kelli Carneal recorded 14 assists, while Monique Russell dug nine balls.
“It was great to be back in front of our home crowd,” said Loeswick, whose team played its first home match since Sept. 8. “We did not execute quite at the level I was hoping for, but we're going to get back to work tomorrow and prepare for Friday's match against a good Mercer team.”
With the first set tied at 15-15, a key five-point run allowed UNF to pull away from Stetson. A Medina-Claessens block capped the run as the Ospreys held a 20-15 advantage. UNF and Stetson battled over the next few points until the Ospreys won the set on a Hatter service error.
In set two, UNF went on another key run midway through the set, this time using a six-point spurt to separate itself from the Hatters. Up by two, a kill from Claessens started the run that resulted in the Ospreys holding an 18-10 advantage. Although Stetson attempted to chip away at UNF's lead, a block from
Julie Trembley and Jenkins and back-to-back
Marija Pantovic aces sealed the set win for the Ospreys.
An early 10-1 run gave UNF with a large cushion to work with in the third set. The Ospreys eventually built up their first of two 11-point leads as a Medina-
Cameron McGuire block put UNF ahead 21-10. UNF's final 11-point advantage came on match point with a Stetson attacking error.
UNF returns to action on Friday when the Ospreys host Mercer at UNF Arena. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
