FARMVILLE, Va. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team used an 88th minute goal from freshman Mauricio Valderruten to earn a 1-0 victory at Longwood Saturday evening. It was the Ospreys' first win under new head coach Derek Marinatos.
Valderruten's match-winner was created mostly of his own accord. After collecting a ball around midfield, the freshman forward set off on a breakaway. When Longwood goalkeeper Joel Helmick came out to challenge Valderruten at the top of the box, he simply poked the ball to the right and dumped it into the goal from just inside the endline for his first career match-winning goal.
Though much of the match was scoreless, neither team was without chances. Longwood tallied 11 shots on the match, including three from substitute Jared Windt. Sophomore striker Ricky Lawrence led the way for the Ospreys, putting both of his shots on goal. UNF managed seven shots as a team.
Longwood's best chances of the match took place coming out of halftime, as the Lancers peppered the UNF goal with four shots in the first 10 minutes of the second period.
Freshman goalkeeper Ryan Husted recorded six saves to earn his first career shutout for the Ospreys. Helmick made four saves for Longwood, allowing only the one goal.
UNF improved to 1-1-0 on the year, while the Lancers fell to 1-2-0.
The Ospreys are next in action Wednesday, Sept. 7 when they travel to Orlando for a match at Central Florida. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m.
