
UNF hosts Kennesaw State and Mercer

Volleyball Opens Conference Home Slate

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. –The University of North Florida volleyball team plays its Atlantic Sun Conference home opener this weekend during a quick two-match home stand beginning Friday against Kennesaw State at 7 p.m. in UNF Arena. The Ospreys also host Mercer Saturday at 3 p.m.
UNF is currently 7-8 overall and 1-1 in A-Sun play after splitting a pair of league tilts last weekend. With seven victories at the season's midway point, the Ospreys have already matched their win total from last season.
As a team, UNF ranks third in the conference in blocking at 1.87 blocks per set and leads the A-Sun by holding opponents to just a .187 hitting percentage. A trio of Osprey players are listed among the league's elite in blocking with Carolyn Jenkins ranked second (0.93 bps), Marija Pantovic 9th (0.77) and Dagnija Medina 12th (0.70).
Paige Pridgeon leads the team and is ranked sixth in the conference in kills at 3.14 per set. Pantovic is 11th in hitting percentage (.240) followed by Medina in 17th (.220). Freshman setter Casey Giovanazzi is listed seventh in assists with 7.91 per set.
On the defensive side, libero Nicole Baran ranks third in the Atlantic Sun with 4.34 digs per set.
Kennesaw State is 5-12 on the year having dropped five straight including their first two A-Sun matches. The Ospreys and Owls will be meeting for the eighth time with KSU holding a slim 4-3 advantage in the all-time series. The Owls hold a two-match win streak in the series including a 3-0 win last season.
Mercer snapped a three-match losing skid with a win on Wednesday night and enter the weekend with a 5-11 overall mark (0-2 in A-Sun). Saturday's contest marks the 14th all-time meeting between the Ospreys and Bears with UNF owning an 8-5 lead in the series. Mercer has enjoyed recent success in the series with wins in the last four meetings including last year's 3-1 decision.
North Florida returns to the road following this weekend's home doubleheader. The Ospreys will play three in a row away from Jacksonville with matches at Georgia Southern (Oct. 5), USC Upstate (Oct. 7) and ETSU (Oct. 8).
