BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of North Florida women's tennis team defeated Conference USA foe UAB, 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at the Samford Tennis Complex in Birmingham, Ala.

UNF (2-1) picked up the doubles point to get off to a 1-0 start in the match, claiming wins in the No. 1 and 2. Sophomore Melanie Aguirre and junior Danielle Day teamed up at the No. 1 to defeat UAB's (1-2) duo of Paula Alvarez and Evelien Strijker, 8-3.

In the No. 2 doubles, senior Victoria Krook and freshman Simona Weymar paired up to down Jenny Cape and Giorgia Romeo, 8-6.

The Ospreys secured a point at the No. 1 singles as Day defeated Romeo in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. Weymar claimed a win at No. 4 with a 6-1, 7-5 decision over Caroline Faught..

UAB got on the board first in the No. 5 as Cape defeated freshman Alison Viana, 6-1, 6-0 to cut UNF's lead down to 3-1.

The Blazers also claimed a point in the No. 3 with Alvarez defeating Aguirre in a three set battle. Alvarez took the first set, 7-5, but Aguirre rallied back to win the second set, 6-2. The pair battled in the final set, but Alvarez came out with the 7-6 win, to close the gap to 3-2 UNF lead.

In the No. 6, UNF freshman Melinda Doak scored the match winning point as she battled Brittany DeFelice to three sets. Doak took the first set, 6-2, but DeFelice claimed the second, 6-1. In the final set, Doak held on for the 7-5 win, securing the match for the Ospreys.

UAB claimed a win in a hard fought No. 2 match between UNF's Krook and UAB's Strijker as the two went to three sets. Krook claimed the first set 6-2, but Strijker came back to take sets two and three with scores of 6-4, and 6-2, respectively.

UNF will remain on the road for its next matches, traveling to Charleston, S.C. to face Charleston Southern on Thursday, Feb. 24 and College of Charleston on Friday, Feb. 25.
