JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – For the sixth time in its last eight matches, the North Florida women's soccer team outshot its opponent. Unfortunately, it was Kennesaw State (6-4-1, 3-1 A-Sun) that found the back of the net to escape with a 1-0 victory over the Ospreys (3-8, 2-2 A-Sun) in the rain Sunday at KSU Soccer Stadium.
“It's a tough loss on the road,” head coach Linda Hamilton said. “The girls played hard today in rainy conditions and pushed a really good Kennesaw State team for 90 minutes. We obviously wanted to come out of this weekend 2-0, but we can definitely build on this experience. Now, we have to get ourselves ready for our next set of games and hopefully make an impact on the conference standings.”
One of Kennesaw State's leading offensive threats Alyssa Mahan opened the scoring in the 15th minute when she found the back of the net from 20 yards out. It was Mahan's third goal of the season.
Despite the early goal from the Owls, which would stand as the game-winner, the Ospreys continued to fight on both sides of the ball as they have all season. North Florida took five shots in the second half alone, while the stingy defense held Kennesaw State to just one shot in the last 67 minutes of the match.
Ospreys' freshman forward Lauren Hopfensperger tallied a match-high four shots, putting one on target. Freshmen midfielder Heather Botelho and forward Carolina Lencina also added one shot on goal each for the North Florida squad.
North Florida will return home to face East Tennessee State on Friday, Oct. 1. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Hodges Stadium.
