JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – For the fourth time in six years, the North Florida women's soccer team (2-6-0, 1-0-0 A-Sun) begins with a 1-0 record in the Atlantic Sun Conference. The Ospreys defeated Stetson (3-6-0, 0-1-0 A-Sun) Friday night, 1-0, at Hodges Stadium.
“It's important for us, based on the year we've had, to come away with as many wins now as we can,” head coach Linda Hamilton said. “The whole reason we did what we did in non-conference was to be ready for teams in the conference. This win was even more crucial because we were at home. This win, I think, will give the girls a bit of confidence going into the next game. Hopefully we can take this and move forward one game at a time.”
North Florida earned its first shutout of the year with a stifling defensive front that only allowed five shots (two on goal) and junior goalkeeper Brittany Hahn grabbing two saves to pick up her second win of the year.
Offensively, the Ospreys tallied 14 shots (five on goal) and were led by freshman forward Carolina Lencina who netted her second goal on the year (45th minute) and first game-winning goal of her career.
The Osprey offense continues to outshoot its opponent for the fifth consecutive game, besting the Hatters in the category, 14-5.
Up next, North Florida takes on Florida Gulf Coast at Hodges Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 19, at 1 p.m. The squad looks to go 2-0-0 in Atlantic Sun play for the third time in four years.
