Women's Tennis Beats South Alabama, 6-1

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida women's tennis team defeated South Alabama, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon in Mobile, Ala. UNF remains undefeated on the season with a 4-0 record.

The Jaguars (0-1) finished the 2009 season with a No. 52 ranking and were No. 53 entering into the 2010 season. 

After dropping the doubles point, UNF picked up points in all six singles matches. In the No. 1 spot, sophomore Aline Berkenbrock defeated Katie Welch, 6-3, 6-0. 

Senior Raquel Castro downed Maria Boura, 6-2, 6-2, in No. 2 singles, while sophomore transfer Danielle Day picked up the 7-5, 6-2 win over Chane Hines in the No. 3 match. 

In No. 4 singles, junior Victoria Krook defeated Jess Courtnell, 7-5, 6-2. 

USA forfeited to the Ospreys in the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches for the final two UNF points.

South Alabama picked up the doubles point. Welch and Hines teamed up to defeat Berkenbrock and Castro, 8-6, in the No. 1 match. In the No. 2 spot, Boura and Courtnell defeated Day and Holton, 9-7.

UNF was scheduled to face Troy on Sunday, but due to inclement weather in Alabama the match has been cancelled. The Ospreys will return to the court Friday, Feb. 19, and Sunday, Feb. 21, when they host Florida A&M at 2 p.m. and College of Charleston at 11 a.m., respectively.
