Ospreys smash five doubles in loss

UNF posts 13 hits

Box Score

MIAMI - The University of North Florida baseball team churned out 13 hits, including five doubles on Tuesday night but were plagued by five errors in a 10-6 loss to Florida International.

UNF (6-13) got two-baggers from Michael Smith, Preston Hale, Justin Preckajlo, Andrew Karmeris and Kevin Martin. Martin finished a perfect 2-for-2 with two RBIs, while Karmeris scored a season-high three times.

The Ospreys got off to a fast start, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Hale crushed a double to the gap in left center. Wilson, reached base on a bunt single, scored on the play from first base.

After FIU (10-4) tallied a run in the bottom of the first, UNF reclaimed the lead when sophomore Sam Perry's bases-loaded sacrifice fly drove in Karmeris.

The Panthers notched two runs in the bottom of third to take a 3-2 lead. FIU extended its lead to 4-2 in the fourth before Wilson threaded an RBI single down the left field line to drive in Smith, making the game 4- 3 in favor of the Panthers.

But in the bottom of the fifth, back-to-back home runs by FIU's Ryan Mollica and Tyler Townsend and two Osprey errors helped the Panthers put up five runs and take a 9-3 lead. Three of the runs were unearned.

UNF made a charge in the top of the sixth when it loaded the bases, which set the table for Martin's colossal two-run double to right center. The Ospreys cut the FIU lead to 9-6 in the top of the eighth when Karmeris led with a double and scored on a single up the middle by junior David Eldredge.

After the single by Eldredge, FIU's Jorge Malban entered the game and stifled the Ospreys for the final 1.2 innings to pick up the save.

Sophomore starting LHP Robbie Collier dropped to 0-1 after allowing three runs on five hits in 2.2 innings pitched with one strikeout. Junior RHP Tucker Pryor finished with four strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work, while senior RHP Spencer Jones struck out one and allowed one run on three hits in 2.0 innings of relief.

The Ospreys will wrap up their series with FIU at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in Miami.
