MIAMI - The University of North Florida baseball team outhit Florida International but could not take advantage of chances and fell 3-0 at FIU Baseball Stadium on Wednesday.
UNF (6-14) tallied nine hits to FIU's eight but left 14 on base. Junior TJ Thompson led UNF at the plate with a season-high three hits, bringing up his season average to .224 from .185. His performance snapped a 2-for-28 slump at the plate.
Despite not putting up any runs, UNF made it very interesting in the last two innings. Two walks by FIU RHP Jorge Marban and an error by FIU second baseman Ryan Mollica that allowed Preston Hale to reach base gave redshirt freshman Andrew Karmeris a loaded diamond.
With the count 1-and-2, Karmeris launched a ball to deep left center that soared through the air, but FIU center fielder Lamaar Guy made the catch at the warning track to dash the dramatic comeback and end the game.
The Ospreys had a chance to tie the game in the top of the eighth when Karmeris reached on a fielder's choice and Thompson singled through the right side to set the table for junior Kevin Martin.
After fouling off several pitches and making Marban work for it, Martin crushed a high fly ball to deep right field, but it was just a few feet short of the wall and FIU right fielder Tyler Townsend made the catch to end the inning.
UNF used six pitchers in the game in an effort to limit pitch counts and give others in the bullpen some work. Starter John Frawley was able to stifle the Golden Panthers, holding them scoreless in 2.0 innings of work while allowing just two hits and striking out two.
Kristopher Linster, Antonio Franzese and Matt Boyd combined to pitch 3.0 innings of scoreless ball out of the bullpen. In 1.1 innings of work, Franzese held FIU hitless in his first outing since March 8 against Jacksonville.
Senior Brian Wilson finished 2-for-4 with a double. Hale also had a two-bagger. It was the fourth time this year the Ospreys outhit their opponent and came up with a loss.
UNF will return to conference action this weekend when it takes on Belmont in a three-game series beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday.
