JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's tennis team battled back after dropping the doubles point to Georgia Southern Saturday to take a 5-2 win and keep its spotless record at the UNF Tennis Complex in tact.
“We came out strong in doubles but fell short,” UNF assistant coach Javier Ferrin said. “The performance was good but we did not capitalize on opportunities to shift the momentum.”
UNF (4-2) gathered a 9-7 win at the No. 2 doubles position but fell by a score of 8-5 in the top spot and 8-2 at No. 3.
“When the guys went back to the court for singles, their intensity was at its highest,” Ferrin said. “Their attitude was reflected by a quick turn around, repositioning the team to take advantage of the score.”
Freshman Marcos Chiaretti turned in the first individual result – a straight-set win at the No. 5 spot. He defeated Matt Flynn 6-1, 6-3 before junior Levi Federico knocked off Joris DeWeerdt at the top singles spot by the same score.
The Ospreys climbed to a 3-1 lead when sophomore Graham Edgar soared over Mark Paetz 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 6 singles spot. After the Eagles tallied their only singles win at the second position – a 6-2, 6-2 win by Gregory Bekkers over freshman Marc Misanovic', UNF closed the match with a pair of three-set wins.
UNF touts a 3-0 record on its home courts this season and after a little less than two weeks without a match will return to the UNF Tennis Complex to open Atlantic Sun Conference play against Florida Gulf Coast on March 6.
