UNF men’s soccer plays Jacksonville in the SunTrust River City Rumble
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team continues Atlantic Sun Conference play with a single match on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. against in-town rival Jacksonville at the Ashley Sports Complex. The match will be the second event in the SunTrust River City Rumble and also be the A-Sun Match of the Week.
“It's a rivalry match,” head coach Ray Bunch remarked. “Anytime you play these kind of matches form goes out the window. It is going to be a lot of emotion. It is going to be very feisty. It will come down to which team can keep their heads, be disciplined and play soccer. It will be a hostile crowd just like there was a hostile crowd here last year. Hopefully, some of our fans will come out there so we can nullify that a bit. It doesn't matter what their record is or what our record is going into that match. It comes down to emotion and discipline, but they are usually very entertaining matches.”
North Florida enters the match after upsetting previously undefeated Stetson, 2-0, at Hodges Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 4. In the fifth minute of the match, junior Adam O'Neill scored his team-leading third goal of the season on a header that was crossed from sophomore Peter Lauer. Lauer edged his way down the sideline setting up a perfect cross for O'Neill's attack.
In the second half, freshman Greg Crowell added an insurance goal. O'Neill took a corner kick for the Ospreys and put the ball in the middle of a scrum. Crowell collected the loose ball at point blank range and put it in the back of the net to increase the UNF advantage to 2-0.
The defense took over to preserve the shutout. Sophomore goalkeeper Jullian Beau recorded six saves in the match en route to his first win of the season. The team also added a save, giving UNF seven saves on the night. Stetson attempted 14 shots on the evening but each attempt was turned away by the stout Osprey defense.
UNF and JU will compete in every sport offered by both schools throughout the season. A winner is determined by which school wins the most out of the 20 events played during the season. The Ospreys will look to pull even in the SunTrust River City Rumble. The Dolphins hold a 1-0 advantage after the JU volleyball team defeated UNF, 3-0, on Wednesday, Sept. 16.
Matches can be viewed at ASun.TV. The price is $5.99 per event or $9.99 for a month subscription. Yearly subscriptions are available for just $69.99. To purchase an event CLICK HERE.
