Week Recap
The Ospreys put together their first winning streak of the season with one-goal decisions over Georgia Southern and Flagler. UNF visited GSU on Sept. 17, shutting out the Eagles to make junior Steven Lowenthal's late goal the deciding factor. Click here for the full story.
Hodges Stadium hosted its second men's soccer match of the season on Saturday when Flagler came to battle the Ospreys. The match truly was a battle, needing extra time for a decision. Six minutes into overtime, tied at 1-1, sophomore Akil DeFreitas darted into the box, looking to score the game-winner, but a foul halted his attack. Fellow sophomore Adam O'Neill provided the game-winner in the form of a penalty kick, his second of the season. Click here for the full story.
Who's Hot
O'Neill netted his second game-winning penalty kick of the season against Flagler. The mark ties for second in the A-Sun (tied with three others). O'Neill also averages two shots per game, ranking him seventh in the conference while his two goals on the season also ranks seventh (tied with others).
Junior Matthew Hollyoak anchors an Osprey defense that posted its first shutout last week against GSU. Hollyoak saw all 90 minutes of action in the contest and has been on the field for all but three minutes this season, playing 658 minutes.
Senior Tony Restino, a transfer from Webber International, jumped right into the mix at UNF and has seen every minute of action in goal for the Ospreys this season. With 34 saves, Restino ranks second in the A-Sun and his goals against average of 1.36 ranks fifth.
Record Watch
With two game-winning goals this season, O'Neill is on pace for five, which would top the UNF single-season list and also boost O'Neill to the top of the career list. He scored two game-winners last season and currently ranks fourth on the career game-winning goals list (tied with three others including DeFreitas).
DeFreitas netted four game-winning goals last season and needs just four more in his career to become UNF's all-time leader in that category. The same stat ranks him first for an individual season (tied with A.J. Romano).
Quotables
Head coach Ray Bunch on the winning streak: “It is a great boost of confidence for the guys to see everything we have been working on finally coming together. Still, we must focus on one game at a time and not get ahead of ourselves.”
Bunch on the match with UCF: “Our focus is on UCF and trying to stay away from more injuries. We feel like we are finally playing near the level we want to be, and we hope to continue that trend against the Knights on Wednesday.”
Bunch on the timing of the break: “The time off really comes at a good time. We have some guys with minor injuries, and this gives time for them to heal and be prepared to enter our conference schedule full strength.”
