UNF visits N.C. State, hosts USC Upstate and ETSU this week
TROY, Ala. – Despite scoring her second goal of the weekend and season in the waning minutes of Sunday's match against Alabama A&M, junior Kristin Rhodes and the University of North Florida ended play in the Troy Tournament with a 3-2 loss.
UNF (3-4-1) watched the Bulldogs (2-6-0) sprint to an early lead when Belinda Kanda found the net less than four minutes into the match. Brittan Thomas increased the Alabama A&M lead to 2-0 at the 30:41 mark.
It seemed the Bulldogs would ride their two goal advantage into the half, but Lady Osprey freshman Kristen Matteuzzi narrowed the gap only one minute before the break. Taking a pass from sophomore Lindi DiMaio, Matteuzzi fired a shot past Bulldog keeper Racquel Johnson, making the halftime score 3-2 in favor of the Bulldogs.
Crushing any momentum that UNF might have ridden from scoring just as the first half came to a close, Alabama A&M added what would prove to be a crucial goal in the 70th minute when LeTisha Davis slipped a shot past UNF keeper Erica Lippitt. Both Lippitt and Johnson made five saves in the contest.
Rhodes attempted to spark a late rally for the Lady Ospreys, scoring an unassisted goal with a little less than three minutes left to play to make the score 3-2. The Bulldogs held off the UNF threat to take their second win of the season.
