Box Score MOBILE, Ala. - The University of North Florida men's tennis team made the most of its marathon six-hour match on Friday afternoon by posting the biggest upset of the program's Division I existence with a 4-3 upset win over 29th-ranked South Alabama at USA's Lubel Memorial Courts.
UNF (2-1) surprised the Jaguars (1-2) by collecting the doubles point out of the gates and then benefitted from a short USA lineup in singles to clinch the program's first win over a ranked opponent since moving to Division I three seasons ago. UNF senior
Eduardo Pereira continued his fine work for the Ospreys by claiming a 6-1, 6-0 win over Marek Sramek at No. 1 singles. Pereira also teamed with partner
Kurt Gattiker to knock off USA's Aaron Krisan and R.J. Nagel 8-4 at No. 2 doubles to clinch the doubles point and a 1-0 lead early in the match.
"This was a great team effort that ended in a victory we have been seeking for a long time," UNF head coach Igal Buberman said. "This is a great motivational tool that will keep us working hard. It is a great win and experience for our young team."
Freshman
Graham Edgar clinched the win for the Ospreys at No. 5 singles with his victory over USA's Aaron Krisan, who retired in the third set with the score 4-6, 7-6 (10-8). UNF freshman Adrian Escarte won at No. 6 singles by forfeit when the Jaguars failed to fill the lineup spot with an opponent.
Those victories came on the heels of another strong doubles performance by UNF, which claimed the bottom two matches to capture the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead. Gattiker and Pereira won at No. 2, while Escarte and
Javier Ferrin won by forfeit at the No. 3 position. UNF's
Yuiti Lopes and Argumedo Alejandro lost 8-4 at No. 1 doubles to Jack Baker and Sramek, who are ranked No. 8 nationally.
UNF will travel to Troy, Ala., on Saturday afternoon to face Troy, their second Sun Belt Conference opponent in as many days. Match time is set for noon ET at the Lunsford Tennis Complex.
