Lady Ospreys take on Stetson, Florida Gulf Coast this weekend
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - After a quality road conference win last weekend, the University of North Florida women's volleyball team will try to do more of the same with road matches against Stetson and Florida Gulf Coast this weekend.
The Lady Ospreys begin action at 6 p.m. on Friday in DeLand, Fla., against Stetson, a team that has yet to record an Atlantic Sun Conference win this year. UNF will head to Fort Myers, Fla., on Saturday for a 5 p.m. tilt with FGCU, which is tied for first place in the A- Sun with Lipscomb.
UNF picked up a 3-1 win (25-21, 27-25, 21-25, 26- 24) over Campbell last Saturday in Buies Creek, N.C., to snap a four-match losing streak. Sophomore Kaley Read led the Lady Ospreys with a match-high 23 kills and a career-high 24 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Read also recorded four blocks along with freshman Shawna Metcalf. Senior Bary Rasmussen was UNF's other leading attacker with 11 kills.
Stetson's last win came on Sept. 23 in a 3-2 decision (25-21, 23-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-12) over Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach, Fla. The last place Hatters defeated the Lady Ospreys twice last season, which broke a streak of six consecutive UNF victories in the series. Rebecca Orzechowicz leads Stetson with 2.45 kills per set, which also puts her 10th in the A-Sun.
Florida Gulf Coast, the 2007 A-Sun regular season champion, has won seven of its last eight and is coming off a 3-2 win (25-23, 14-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-13) against Lipscomb last Saturday. The Eagles have won 17 of their last 19 A-Sun matches and have won three straight over UNF. Ana Kokanovic, the A- Sun's 2007 Player of the Year, leads the Eagles with 3.25 kills (fourth in the A-Sun) and 2.12 blocks per set, while setter Roberta Santos is third in the conference with 9.00 assists per set.
