FARMVILLE, Va. - The University of North Florida men's soccer team surrendered a late first-half goal to snap a tie, and neither team could find the net in the second half, as Longwood upended the Ospreys 2-1 on Friday night on the first day of the Lancer Invitational.
Both of Longwood's goals came on free kicks in the first half -- the last on a diving header from Harvey Headley to account for the game- winner in the 31st minute. The Lancers (2-1) scored their first goal in the 12th minute on a free kick by Martin Vickerton. UNF (1-2) answered at the 27:23 mark on penalty kick by Adam O'Neill to forge a 1-1 tie, but the Ospreys found few opportunities after that.
Longwood outshot the Ospreys 25-9, including a 15-4 margin in the first half.
"We were completely dominated in the first half," UNF head coach Ray Bunch said. "We were two steps behind on everything and came out with very little energy. I thought we were much better in the second half, but we had already put ourselves in a hole by then. Both of the goals against us came off free kicks, which shows our inexperience. I was pleased with how we finished, and hopefully that is something we can build on for Sunday."
O'Neill and Akil DeFreitas each had three shots apiece to lead UNF. Headley tallied a game- high seven shots for the Lancers, including four on goal, while Brian Germain and Martin Vickerton each added four shots apiece for the Lancers. Five of UNF's nine shots were on goal. Freshman Andrew Calise went the distance for the Ospreys in goal.
The Ospreys return to action on Sunday at 10 a.m. against George Washington, a 2-1 loser to Winthrop in Friday's first game.
