BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Sept. 27, 2007) -
University of North Florida freshman golfer Chris Kennedy couldn't have asked for a better debut on
Monday at the Shoal Creek Collegiate Championship.
After two rounds of play at the par-72 layout of Shoal
Creek Golf Club Kennedy leads by a stroke heading
into Tuesday's final 18 holes of play.
Kennedy opened play with a 3-under-par 69 before
shooting even par in the afternoon round to take a one-
stroke advantage over UAB's Zach Sucher and a two-
stroke lead over a group of five players at 1-under-par.
"Chris had a nice day today," UNF head coach Scott Schroeder said. "He has won a few big tournaments
over the last year so he knows he has to go out there
and hit fairways and greens and make a few putts
tomorrow."
UNF as a team opened play with a 292 before
shooting seven shots higher in the afternoon. The
Ospreys fell out of second place in the morning round
into a tie for sixth heading into Tuesday. The Ospreys
have a two-round total of 591, and trail frontrunner
Texas Tech (578) along with UAB (583), Auburn (585),
Oklahoma (588) and Ole Miss (590).
Michael O'Neal - who fired rounds of 73 and 74 to
finish +3 - was UNF's second highest finisher on the
day and is tied for 16th. J.C. Horne (+7), Jeff Dennis
(+8) and Major Forbess (+12) rounded out the scoring
for the Ospreys.
Play at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate will conclude
with a single round, starting Tuesday morning.
