TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The
University of
North Florida softball team dropped its final road
doubleheader of the year, losing a pair of games at
Florida State.
The Seminoles (42-20) won the first game 5-0 before
beating UNF (32-23) 2-1 in the nightcap.
UNF pushed Florida State in the second game, before
falling victim to a seventh-inning rally by FSU in the
bottom of the seventh.
Katie Brosky kept the Seminoles at bay for the first
three innings in the opener, not allowing a hit. The
fourth inning turned out to be a different story,
however, when Yuruby Alicart and Brittany Osmon put
FSU ahead 3-0 with back-to-back home runs.
Florida State added two more runs in the bottom of the
sixth to complete the scoring.
Brosky (9-11) allowed only five hits in the contest, but
three of those went for extra bases.
Kelli Rutenbar collected both of UNF's hits against
FSU starter Teresa Gober (13-4), but was stranded in
scoring position twice.
UNF threw away two golden opportunities to grab a
lead in game two. Amy Higgs reached with a one out
triple in the top of the third but couldn't get any further.
The Lady Ospreys loaded the bases with nobody out
in the top of the fourth when Gwen Williams and
Elizabeth Howell led off the inning with back-to-back
singles and Heather Hyde reached on an error.
Williams was forced out at the plate one batter later
and would be closest Lady Osprey to scoring a run in
the inning.
Jessica Gilmore made the Lady Ospreys pay in the
bottom of the inning when Jessica Gimor singled
home Yuruby Alicart.
UNF finally cashed in during the top of the fifth inning
after Higgs tied a UNF record with her second triple of
the game. Chrisina Evans drove her home with a
single to center.
Evans and Higgs each had a pair of hits to lead the
Lady Ospreys.
FSU's Carly Wynn finally ended the game in the
seventh with a single to right that scored Veronica
Wootson.
UNF closes out play on the 2007 season Saturday
when it hosts Stetson in a 7 p.m. doubleheader.
Seniors Rutenbar, Higgs, Brosky and Evans will be
honored between games along with junior Jessica Sexton.
