GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Several laps around the track was the highlight of the University of North Florida track and field teams on day two of the UF/Pepsi Relays, with four Ospreys competing in the 5000m run. Junior Amanda Davey finished the day with the Ospreys best individual placing.
Davey spent most of the event huddled in the pack, holding firmly to the number five position. With less than 100m left, Davey made a last minute surge running by the competition and finishing the race in second place. Davey finished in 17:11.31, blowing her personal best out of the water by more than 20 seconds. Senior Sarah Coghlan joined Davey in the 5k, taking seventh place with a time of 17:50.40. Like Davey, Coghlan started the race by hanging with the pack, before breaking out toward the end to improve her individual finish.
On the men's side, two freshmen took the reins in the 5k, with Fredrik Johansson finishing in 13th place and Sammy Palmer taking 15th. Johansson and Palmer began the race running one and two for North Florida before Johansson eventually pulled away. This was the first time Johansson competed in the 5000m in his outdoor career, with him finishing the race in 15:12.48. Palmer set a new personal best in the event (15:14.60) beating his previous best from the FSU Relays on March 29-31, by more than 30 seconds.
Emily Kohler took part in the javelin throw, smoothly making it through the trials before moving into the finals. At the end of the event, Kohler ended up in fifth place with a distance of 37.61m. The women's team of Golden Creavy, Amy Stroder, Karissa Sullivan and Charisma Sullivan participated in the 4x100m relays finishing in 48.17.
The Ospreys return to action April 14, where they will participate in the FSU Invite.
