TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The hot Florida weather proved to be no match for the University of North Florida women's track and field team, as they shattered four school records, while participating in the FSU Invite.
Amy Stroder had by far the most exciting day, after setting a new school record and personal best in the high jump. Stroder jumped 1.78m (5'10") beating her previous best by .08m and breaking a school record that has not been touched since 1989. Leniesa Thompson previously held the outdoor record in the high jump with a height of 5'8". The height not only set a new school record, but would have regionally qualified Stroder for the NCAA tournament, if UNF were allowed to participate in post season. Currently, Stroder's height would rank her 5th in the East Region performance list, which includes the top-15 athletes in the Eastern Region. Stroder would also be ranked 27th in the high jump out of every athlete competing in that event at the Division I level.
In the women's long jump, Emily Kohler beat her own school record, which she set last season. Kohler jump a total distance of 5.66m (18.07) earning second place in the event. The distance beats her personal best and school record by several inches. Kohler also tied her personal best in the high jump finishing second, only to Stroder with a height of 1.68m.
"I'm really proud of our efforts today," assistant coach Julie Stackhouse said. "I think that they are only going to get better between now and conference. It's all coming together at the right time."
Another Lady Osprey beating a school record which they already held, was freshman Mary Beth Renfro, who shattered her previous record in the 100m hurdles by .34 seconds. The record was previously set by Golden Creavy, but was broken earlier in the season by Renfro, while competing at the USF Invite on March 9. Renfro's new time of 15.33 earned her third place in the event.
The final school record broken on the day was done so by another freshman on the Lady Osprey squad: Charisma Anderson. Like Stroder, Anderson broke a record that had been long standing, overtaking Le'Titia Parson's 1995 record of 12.37 in the 100m dash. Anderson's final time in the event was 12.31, beating her personal best by a little more than .10 seconds.
"Event by event we're moving our way up in conference," Stackhouse said. "It's going to be a total team effort in the next three weeks."
On the men's side, Fredrik Johansson took second place in the 1500m with a time of 4:03.75, before finishing the 800m run in third place. Competing in the 3000m for the first time this season was Goran Kosic, who took fourth place with a time of 9:07.48.
The Ospreys return to action for their final tune up for conference on April 28 when they head to Orlando for the UCF Invite.
