Diamond Ospreys blast Bruins
in game two of doubleheader

April 6, 2007

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - After losing its offensive stride in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday against Belmont, the University of North Florida baseball team broke out at the plate for a 19-3 win in game two at Harmon Stadium.

UNF (14-20, 5-6 Atlantic Sun Conference) set a new team record for runs in an A-Sun game, breaking the previous mark of 18 they scored last season in a win over ETSU. The Ospreys blasted five home runs in the win, which left them just one off the team record.

Seniors Jon Dandridge and Jimmy Glanville each knocked out their fourth home run of the season, while Andrew Hannon, Mycal Jones and Ryan Lowe all hit their first career blasts. Freshman TJ Thompson continued his string of exceptional play, finishing 3-for-4 on the day with four RBIs and a run scored.

Senior starting RHP Derek Bell (2-1) finally got the run support he needed, as he stifled Bruins hitters in a six inning, six strikeout performance in which he allowed only one run on five hits. Antonio Franzese, Ryan McCoy and Matt Boyd combined to close out the game. Franzese struck out two in his one inning of relief.

The Ospreys did all of their damage in the first four innings which was aided by mammoth multi-run homers. Dandridge started the round-tripper parade in the bottom of the first for a three-run home run to spark a four-run inning.

Jones led off the second with a solo home run. Not to be outdone, Hannon hit a two-run blast later in the inning to cap a six-run second. In the bottom of the third, Glanville launched a towering three-run homer to left which was later duplicated by Lowe to cap off a seven-run third inning.

In game one, senior starting LHP Brad Johnson tossed another stellar game, but once again the bats of the Ospreys were lost and he wasn't able to get the run support he needed. Johnson struck out a career-high 10 batters in seven innings of work and allowed one unearned run on five hits. It was the first time an Osprey pitcher had struck out 10 since Jeremy Papelbon did it last season against Gardner-Webb.

Belmont held a 1-0 lead through the first six and a half innings, but UNF came alive in the bottom of the seventh when freshman Preston Hale's fielder's choice to shortstop allowed sophomore Brian Wilson to score and tie the game. But the Ospreys couldn't seem to get over the hump after that, leaving a total of six runners on base in the last three innings.

Junior RHP Travis Martin (2-3) picked up the loss after giving up one run on one hit and not retiring any batters. Sophomore RHP Tyler Stohr pitched the last two innings and allowed one unearned run on two hits.

The Ospreys will try to go for the series win tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Harmon Stadium. It will be the first radio broadcast on UNF's new home, WBOB-AM 1320 in Jacksonville. Live stats will be available on UNFOspreys.com.
