KENNESAW, Ga. - The
University of North Florida softball team closed out
road play in the Atlantic Sun Conference with a pair of
losses to Kennesaw State on Saturday at Bailey Field.
KSU (39-17, 13-3 A-Sun) won the first game 4-0
before defeating the Lady Ospreys (32-21, 8-8 A-Sun)
2-1 in eight innings.
Gwen Williams collected a hit in both games of the
doubleheader to lead UNF, while Devyn Findley took
the loss in each contest. Findley only surrendered four
runs in 11.1 innings of work, but didn't get much in the
way of offensive support. The Lady Ospreys scored
one run on the day to go along with six hits.
Findley was her own worst enemy in the opener, as
she walked No. 8 hitter Megan Gant twice. Gant was
lifted in the third inning for pinch runner Catherine
Rodriguez, who came around to score the first run of
the game on a Kelley Cowart single. Gant reached
again with a two-out walk in the fourth and came in to
score when Amanda Malcolm followed her with a
double to left-center.
The Lady Ospreys best chance to score came in the
second when they loaded the bases with one out.
Elizabeth Howell led off the inning with her team
leading 14th double before Heather Hyde reached on
a walk two outs later and moved to second when
Findley reached on an error. That's all the farther they
would get, however.
UNF also loaded the bases in the sixth, but came up
empty on that rally as well.
KSU finally sealed the win when they touched Katie
Brosky for a pair of runs in the sixth.
Brittany Matthews (20-4) allowed two hits in the win
and struck out seven before throwing 2.2 innings of
hitless relief to claim the win in the nightcap.
Gant proved to be a thorn in Findley's side again in
game two, driving home the first run of the game in the
bottom of the second inning.
Kara Rutenbar answered that with UNF's only run of
the day, hitting a solo home run to lead off the third
inning.
The game stayed tied 1-1 until the eighth inning when
the Lady Owls loaded the bases with one out and
went on to claim the victory after Findley (16-5) hit April
Keasler to bring home the winning run.
Williams and Ashley Parenteau each had a hit for the
Lady Ospreys. Williams has now reached base safely
in 23 straight games and extended her hitting streak
to 11 games on Saturday.
The Lady Ospreys will take next week off for finals
before returning to action on May 4 at Florida State.
UNF will wrap up the 2007 season on May 5 when it
hosts Stetson for senior day at the UNF Softball
Complex.
