MACON, Ga. - University of
North Florida shortstop Ashley Parenteau tied the
school's career home run mark on Friday night in the
second game of a doubleheader sweep of Mercer at
Sikes Field.
UNF (32-19, 8-6 A-Sun) won the opener 2-0 before
defeating the Bears (9-40, 2-8 A-Sun) 5-1 in the
second game.
Parenteau - a junior from Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. -
now has 17 home runs in her career tying the mark
set by Tracy Jester in 2000.
All seven of UNF's runs on the day came via the long
ball. Gwen Williams hit a two-run homerun in each
end of the doubleheader, while Parenteau and Devyn Findley went deep in the second game as well.
The home runs gave the UNF pitching duo of Findley
and Katie Brosky all the help they needed, as they
battled past Mercer's Stephanie Rossman, who took
the loss in both games.
Rossman (3-14) only allowed one hit in the opening
game, but it was the only hit that mattered. After
allowing a leadoff walk to Kelli Rutenbar to begin the
contest, Williams parked her eighth home run of the
season over the wall in left-center to give UNF a 2-0
advantage.
The Lady Ospreys didn't put another runner on base
until Elizabeth Howell reached in the seventh inning
when she was hit by a pitch.
Findley (15-3) was just as effective as Rossman,
surrendering only three hits in the complete-game
victory. She walked two, struck out five and got a little
help from a Rutenbar pickoff at first.
Williams sparked a rally in the second game, getting
the Lady Ospreys on the board in the top of the third
with a two run home run. Christina Evans kept the
third inning alive with a two out base hit to left before
scoring on the home run. Williams has now reached
base safely in 21-straight games and will carry a nine-
game hitting streak into Saturday's doubleheader at
Kennesaw State.
With her nine home runs this season, Williams is
quickly gaining on Parenteau in the career home run
race. She now has 14 for her career, which ranks her
fourth on the all-time list and three behind Parenteau.
Mercer scored its only run of the day in the bottom of
the third before Parenteau smashed a solo home run
to center field. The round tripper was her fourth of the
season.
Findley added a two-run home run in the top of the
sixth to complete the scoring.
Brosky (9-10) came close to duplicating Findley's
effort in the opener. She allowed only three hits, while
giving up one run and surrendering a pair of walks.
UNF wraps up its two-day road trip through Georgia
with a pair of games at Kennesaw State on Saturday
at 2 p.m.
