JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - After
suffering its first doubleheader sweep of the season
on Friday night, the University of North Florida softball
team responded with a sweep of its own, taking down
Atlantic Sun frontrunner East Tennessee State at the
UNF Softball Complex.
Gwen Williams continued to light up opposing
pitching, collecting four hits on the day and driving in
four. She helped lead UNF (29-19, 6-6 A-Sun) to a 3-1
win in the opener and a 13-5 victory over the Lady
Buccaneers (22-22, 9-5 A-Sun) in the second game.
Devyn Findley worked both ends of the doubleheader
for the Lady Ospreys, earning the win in the opener
while striking out 12 overall.
UNF pounded out 16 hits in game two, with six players
collecting at least two hits. Williams and Amy Higgs
each had three to lead the way.
"We closed out the weekend on a positive note," UNF
head coach Sonya Wilmoth said. "We swung the bats
well today and got some good work from Devyn Findley."
The Lady Ospreys never trailed in the opening game,
posting a pair of runs in the first inning on a Findley
base hit that scored Kelli Rutenbar before it squirted
through the legs of ETSU centerfielder Kate Powell to
bring in an unearned run.
That was enough for Findley (14-3) who struck out
eight of ETSU's first 12 batters. The Lady Bucs finally
got to Findley in the seventh, scoring a run on a
Cheniece Cason base hit. That marked the end of
Findley's day after 6.1 innings of work.
Katie Brosky came on from there, striking out Dez
Franklin before watching Christina Evans make a
diving catch in right-center, killing a bases-loaded rally
that started against Findley. The save was the second
of the year for Brosky.
Game two started as a slugfest before Findley came
on in the fourth to nail the contest down. The teams
combined for 10 runs in the first two innings and 18
for the game. ETSU struck first with a run in the
opening inning, but quickly fell behind when Findley
and Heather Hyde drove home runs in the bottom of
the frame, following up an Elizabeth Howell RBI
double that helped stake UNF to a 3-1 lead.
Jessica Hackworth's two run home run capped off a
three-run rally by the Bucs in the second, but UNF was
there to answer again with three runs of its own.
Williams brought home two of those runs with a
double before Findley accounted for another run with
an RBI single up the middle.
Findley finished the game 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
UNF finally pulled away with five runs in the bottom of
the fourth. Ashley Parenteau started the rally with a
double, but narrowly missed tying the all-time home
record at UNF when the ball bounced off the top of the
fence and carried back into play instead of bouncing
over.
Higgs brought home three runs in the inning with an
RBI double before Williams brought her in with a
single.
Hyde finally sent everyone home early with a home run
to straight-away center, ending the game in the fifth
inning via the mercy rule.
Joanna Kurycki (1-1) earned her first win as a Lady
Osprey with an inning of relief. She gave way to
Findley who allowed only three hits in two innings of
work.
The Lady Ospreys will remain home for their next
outing, hosting Florida A&M on Tuesday in a 2 p.m.
doubleheader.
