Late inning rally falls short

March 10, 2007

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A late inning charge by the University of North Florida baseball team was not enough to overcome the steady slugging of Connecticut on Saturday, as the Ospreys fell 9-7 at Harmon Stadium in the 2007 Kennel Club Classic.

Junior shortstop Chad Knight finished 2-for-5 on the day and collected three RBIs. Sophomore center fielder Brian Wilson extended his hitting streak to five games after finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Senior right fielder Jon Dandridge went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.

Down 9-5 in the bottom of the ninth, the Ospreys (7-11) dug down and got something going. Knight smashed an RBI double to left field that drove in Dandridge to help UNF creep closer. Olinto followed it up with an RBI single that knocked in freshman Andrew Hannon to pull the Ospreys to within two runs of the UConn lead.

Junior designated hitter Travis Martin was able to keep the pressure on, as he loaded the bases with a one-out walk and represented the winning run. But both senior catcher James Belyea and senior first baseman Jimmy Glanville weren't able to get it done, as Belyea struck out and Glanville grounded into a game-ending fielder's choice.

UConn (3-8) got on the board first, putting up two runs in the top of the first and one in the top of the third to take a 3-0 lead. The Huskies did more damage in the top of the fifth inning, tacking on two more runs to extend their lead to 5-0.

UNF battled back in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 5-4. Junior Mike Smith's RBI infield single that drove in Wilson got the ball rolling. Knight followed it up with a two-run single that knocked in Dandridge and Smith. Olinto grounded into a double play in the next at-bat, but Warren was able to score on the play.

The Huskies added another run in the top of the next inning, but UNF answered back with another run to make the score 6-5 on Wilson's RBI single.

But UConn kept the pressure on at the plate, adding two more runs in the top of the eighth and one run in the top of the ninth.

Martin picked up the loss for the Ospreys, as he got the starting nod on the mound as well as being the designated hitter. He went 4.1 innings and allowed three earned runs on nine hits while striking out one.

UNF will close out the weekend at 2 p.m. tomorrow against the UNC Greensboro Spartans at Harmon Stadium in the 2007 Kennel Club Classic. Live stats and audio will be available on UNFOspreys.com.
