JOHNSON CITY, Tenn.- The University of North Florida men's and women's indoor track and field teams concluded the Atlantic Sun Conference Indoor Championship with the women tying for fifth, one point out of fourth place, while the men finished sixth. The meet saw several Ospreys earn all-conference honors, as well.
"We have a lot of freshmen on our team and we're filling spots," assistant coach Julie Stackhouse said. "We're very pleased; it was a total team effort today. We'll be a force to be reckoned with in the years to come."
Day one of the A-Sun championship was a busy one for freshmen Anne DelBovo and Karissa Sullivan who both participated in the women's pentathlon. The pentathlon consisted of five events: 60m hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and the 800m run. DelBovo's best finish of the pentathlon came in the long jump where she took first place with a distance of 5.07, earning 578 points. The finish wasn't enough to give DelBovo first overall in the pentathlon, with her ending the event in ninth place, while Sullivan took seventh place.
Freshman Elise Trexler had a great showing in the women's high jump, finishing with a height of 1.67m, a career best and good enough to give her second place. The finish also gave Trexler the first all-conference finish of her career. Emily Kohler finished the high jump in fourth place with a height of 1.62m, while Amy Stroder finished in fifth. Kohler also participated in the long jump, where she finished fourth, jumping 5.57m. DelBovo competed along side Kohler, finishing in ninth place, with a distance of 5.11m.
On the track side, Amanda Davey improved on her finish in the 3000m from last season, taking third place this year with a total time of 10:21.00. The time broke Davey's previous career best in the indoor 3000m. Davey also managed to capture the most all-conference honors for the Ospreys, taking home three. Sarah Coghlan finished right behind Davey, taking fourth place after finishing in 10:30.97. Davey and Coghlan also finished back-to-back in the 5000m with Davey taking third (18:03.88) and Coghlan fourth (18:10.63).
In the women's mile, Kelly Marshall led the way for the Lady Ospreys finishing in fifth place. Marshall crossed the finish line in 5:19.75. Freshman Hillary Adams was the next Lady Osprey to finish, taking ninth place with a total time of 5:22.43. Amber Smith finished 11th with a time of 5:28.13.
Charisma Anderson participated in the 200m dash, taking eighth place after finishing in 26.14. In the 400m dash, Stroder and junior Lindsay Tafs finished back-to-back taking fourth and fifth place respectively. Stroder finished in 58.01, while Tafs finished in 58.99.
Both the 4x400m relay team and the distance medley teams picked up third place finish, each earning the Lady Ospreys six team points. The team of Tafs, Golden Creavy, Kohler and Stroder finished the 4x400m in 3:57.42, the Lady Ospreys best time in the event this season. Adams, Tafs, Creavy and Davey finished the DMR with a time of 12:28.88. Both teams earned all-conference honors.
"The 4x400m was exciting because everything came down to that," Stackhouse said. "For all the girls to PR in the conference championship is amazing."
On the men's side, Junior Marvin Moore finished in the top-10 of the 800m run finishing in ninth place with a total time of 2:00.60. Simmons finished the race in 16th place (2:02.42), while Chris Fulcher finished in 21st place (2:11.62).
