BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The University of North Florida softball team turned the tables on UCF, downing the Golden Knights 2-1 behind a complete-game performance by freshman Devyn Findley.
The victory avenged a loss to UCF (3-2) on Saturday and gave the Lady Ospreys (3-2) a third-place finish at the Miken FAU Invitational.
Findley (1-0) allowed only four hits in the contest, while striking out 11 and not allowing a walk. Three of the four hits she surrendered were infield hits.
"The highlight of the day was the way Devyn pitched," UNF coach Sonya Wilmoth said. "She handled herself well for a freshman. That was not a freshman performance against an established Division I program."
UCF loaded the bases after two of those infield hits in the seventh inning, eventually scoring on a Megan Murphy RBI groundout that cut the UNF lead in half. Findley finally worked her way out of the jam by coaxing Lindsay Dean into a groundout that ended the game.
After coming up with only two hits against Allison Chime (2-1) on Saturday, UNF quickly jumped on the UCF righthander in the opening inning Sunday when Ashley Parenteau led off the game with a base hit. She moved up to second on a Christina Evans sacrifice bunt and eventually scored on a Gwen Williams RBI single to center.
Williams gave the Lady Ospreys a 2-0 lead in the top of the third, delivering an RBI single to left that brought home Parenteau.
Williams and Parenteau both finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate.
From there they left it in the hands of Findley who retired the first nine batters she faced before Kacie Feaster reached on an infield single to lead off the fourth. Findley worked around that with a couple of strikeouts to end the fourth inning then went on to strike out the next two hitters she faced as part of a streak that saw her retire another nine in a row.
C.C. Alvarez led the Golden Knights at the plate with a 1-for-3 performance that included a run.
Kelli Rutenbar collected the third hit of the day for UNF, while Williams extended her hitting streak to five games.
"We leave here with a positive outlook for next weekend and future tournaments," Wilmoth said.
The Lady Ospreys are back in action next weekend at the Cougar Invitational in Charleston, S.C.
