Final Stats
MACON, Ga., (Oct. 4, 2007) - The University of North Florida men's soccer team (3-5-0, 2-1-0 A-Sun) dropped its first conference match of the season, falling 1-0 to the Mercer Bears on Thursday night.
UNF (2-1) were outshot 25-14 by the Bears (5-6, 1-2 A-Sun) who picked up their first conference win of the season. The Ospreys were led by Mikhail Awai who recorded five shots, two of which were on goal. Both goalkeepers were challenged with UNF keeper Andrew Calise garnering 12 saves and the Mercer net-minder recorded six saves in his first match of the season.
Mercer broke the 0-0 tie mid-way through the second half when Vincente Arze won a loose ball and tapped it to Olivier Brutus. The sophomore striker did the rest putting home the lone goal of the match in the near posts' upper corner.
UNF threatened to send the game into overtime in the final minute of play when Buddy Wilks nailed a shot from about 20 yards out that Roberto Cronenbold let slip out of his hands. Despite the keeper miscue, the Ospreys were unable to put the ball in the back of the net.
The Ospreys return to action Saturday when they head to Buies Creek, N.C. to take on the Campbell Camels
