MEN'S SOCCER WEEKLY: Ospreys face UCF tonight
10/29/2007 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
Senior Night ceremony planned before 7 p.m. match
Oct. 29, 2007
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida men's soccer team did just what head coach Ray Bunch expected this season -- defying the preseason predictions that had the Ospreys picked dead last in a preseason poll of Atlantic Sun Conference coaches.
With Sunday's win over Lipscomb on the final day of A-Sun play, the Ospreys secured a 5-4 record in league play and fourth place in the final standings. If not for a few missed opportunities during the year, it could have been a championship season, Bunch said.
"We lost at least two games that I really believe we could have won," said Bunch, who is in his 17th season at UNF. "If we win those, we win the championship. We didn't, however, and in the process we learned some valuable lessons, the most important being that you have to be prepared to play each and every time out. Those lessons will serve us well next year. I am proud of what we have done to this point. Now we just need to finish strong."
The season has not concluded for the Ospreys, who will play two non-conference games this week to close out their 2007 season. The Ospreys face UCF on Tuesday night at Hodges Stadium on Senior Night. Game time is set for 7 p.m. They then travel to Conway, S.C., on Saturday to close out the year at Coastal Carolina.
A win both matches would give the Ospreys (7-8) a winning season, their first at the Division I level.
"These will be difficult matches, but if we play well we will have a chance in both," Bunch said.
