KENNESAW, Ga. (Jan. 20, 2007) - The
University of North Florida women's basketball team
put together a strong offensive effort against
Kennesaw State on Saturday afternoon, but came up
just short in a 73-68 loss at the Convocation Center.
Jennifer Guldager hit a jumper with eight seconds to
play to tie the contest with the Lady Owls 60-60,
but KSU (8-10, 4-4 A-Sun) was able to outscore the
Lady Ospreys (3-14, 2-5 A-Sun) 13-8 in the extra
session to come away with the win and snap a two-
game losing streak to UNF.
This was the second-straight game between the
teams at KSU to go to overtime.
UNF had three players in double figures, led by
Jennifer Bowen who scored 16 points, all of which
came in the second half. Guldager and Denisia Andrews each followed her with 12 points.
KSU's Rosetta Hollis led all players with 22 points,
while Jennifer Baker finished the contest with a
double-double for the Lady Owls, scoring 18 points
and pulling down 10 rebounds.
UNF trailed by as many as eight points in the second
half, but chipped away at that lead and eventually
took a 52-51 advantage on a pair of Bowen free
throws.
The Lady Ospreys held a three-point lead before KSU
took a 60-58 lead on a Montinique Nixon jumper.
Guldager eventually tied the game and UNF had a
chance to win it when Bowen's attempt at a buzzer
beater from just beyond mid court hit the back of the
rim and bounced away.
Kennesaw State began to take control in overtime
when Ashley Johnson completed a three-point play
with a free thro that followed a Jennifer Bowen
missed free throw. UNF was 1-for-6 from the free
throw line in overtime.
UNF won the rebounding battle 45-42, but allowed
Kennesaw State to pull down 26 offensive rebounds.
Willonda Windham led UNF with eight rebounds, while
Guldager had seven.
The Lady Ospreys turned the ball over 28 times
compared to 20 times for Kennesaw.
Kennesaw State led 34-28 after a wild first half that
saw three UNF starters spend more time on the
bench than the floor because of foul trouble.
Shandrea Moore picked up three fouls in the opening
half, while Jennifer Guldager and Jennifer Bowen each
had two fouls.
That didn't stop UNF from putting together one of its
better offensive halves of the season and
outrebounding Kennesaw State 21-20. UNF had nine
offensive rebounds in the opening half compared to
13 for Kennesaw State.
Hollis led all scorers with 14 points, while Guldager
and Denisia Andrews each had six points to lead the
Lady Ospreys. Windham had eight rebounds in the
half to eclipse her career high in the opening
frame.
The Lady Ospreys are back home next week when
they host Mercer on Thursday at 7 p.m., followed by
a 2 p.m. matchup with Stetson next Saturday.
