
UNF falls to Winthrop, 5-1

JACKSONVILLE Fla. - The University of North Florida men's soccer team opened its 2006 season with a 5-1 loss to the Winthrop Eagles at the Gardner-Webb tournament on Friday afternoon.
The Eagles dominated the majority of the game, netting two goals in the first half and three in the second before UNF was able to produce a goal.
Otto Loewi scored the first goal of the game for Winthrop after 26 minutes of scoreless play. Matthew Skonicki tallied his first of three goals in the 31st minute, putting the Eagles up 2-0 to end the first half.
Skonicki scored his second and third goals less than three minutes apart in the 59th and 62nd minutes of the match. The Eagles final goal of the game came in the 79th minute of play from Stephen Nsereko.
Mats Elmsater, assisted by Chris O'Brien, scored the Ospreys' lone goal of the match in the 80th minute of competition.
The Osprey registered 10 shots with five shots on goal. Michael Frost collected seven saves for UNF.
UNF continues tournament action on Sunday versus High Point at 2 p.m.
